So, it looks as if Arsenal have wrapped up a move to sign David Ospina this morning and I for one think this is a good bit of business by Wenger. Lukas Fabianski was an excellent backup for us but you have to understand his need for regular first team football at Swansea City. Ospina, from what I saw, was one of the best goalkeepers at the World Cup for Colombia and you have to feel sorry for their bad luck there.
With a whole month left of the transfer window open it is starting to make sense for Wenger to move now. The best talent will be snapped up quickly, especially in the goalkeeping department, as we saw with Real Madrid moving for Keylor Navas who I think was probably the best keeper in Brazil.
Szczesny has bags of potential – there’s no doubt about that. He’s been an excellent keeper for us at times, but occasionally I’ve felt very let down by his performances. The Polish shot stopper has a tendency to make mistakes in some big games. So the arrival of Ospina, I feel, is designed to put some pressure on the keeper. Ospina is much better than Fabianski and will probably get more games than Fabianski did last season.
The rumour from the Emirates is that Ospina could even start the opening game of the Premier League season if he impresses in friendly games prior to the new season. It will be interesting to see how Wenger plays this situation out.
